After working twelve hours of overtime yesterday, I deliriously spent the rest of my night listening to the new Strokes album and watching pole dancing videos on YouTube with this clown.
Um, of course my #choking playlist has Young the Giant on it… as does my workout playlist and my baby makin’ playlist. Just kidding. (I don’t have a workout playlist.)
Shi came up to have lunch with me and watch 500 Days of Summer at Santa Monica Pier last night! LA doesn’t feel like home to me yet, but it felt like home when she was here ♥
I’ve always wanted to A) watch a show at Red Rocks and B) see Mumford and Sons live… Someday I’ll do both (just not any day soon). Mumford announced their one show in LA this year, and it just happens to be the day of my sister’s wedding! Boo whore.
Dessert and drinks at D Bar followed by an encore of Celeste and Jesse Forever with the original Celeste and Jesse Chel and Anthony last night!
When Anthony texted that he was waiting for us in the second row, far left, he meant in the theater that was actually showing the movie, and not the one that Chel and I were sitting in for five minutes before we realized that what we were in the wrong theater! Ha. We always seem to get lost when we’re together…
Young the Giant has been on constant rotation in my car for over a year now. I’m not particularly proud of it (that’s a lie). And I want you to know, it ends right here (also a lie).
On the drive to work this morning, I tried listening to the radio for a change. While flipping through stations, I heard songs by P.M. Dawn, Sir Mix-A-Lot, Mary J. Blige, TLC… Is it 1992? Am I back in the fifth grade? Did I just leave a note in David Krzywicki’s desk telling him that I think he’s cute???
If I wanted to hear 90s music, I’d listen to Shi’s “current” playlist! Ha.
Update (6/9): For those of you who asked—and by ‘those of you’ I mean ANTHONY, and by ‘asked’ I mean demanded—you can download all the songs from this playlist here. Enjoy, my lovelies!
I was too busy shaking my sandy parts to record anything during Santigold, but she was def the highlight of my night! Here’s a vid of her performing in the OC:
Firecrackers in the east, my car parked south
Your hands on my cheeks, your shoulder in my mouth
I was up against the wall on the west mezzanine
We rattle this town, we rattle this scene
Oh, Anna Sun
The Dear Hunter – Home
[audio:http://www.mayanrocks.com/blog/10-the_dear_hunter-home.mp3]
I was listening to FM 94/9 broadcast live from Coachella on the drive home from work today when I heard The Dear Hunter for the first time and thought… why am I not at Coachella again???
I think it’s partly because I thought Outside Lands would have a similar lineup, but mostly because I don’t like camping outdoors and not showering for three days.
I’ve eased up on the concerts lately to save money for that trip to Outside Lands! Now that I’m not going anymore, I regret not buying tickets to see Jason Mraz & Christina Perri. They still have tickets available, but none of them are in the pit!
There are two things you should know about me:
I don’t do nosebleeds.
I always find a way to score awesome seats. Even if I have to sleep outside a Ritmo Latino to get them. Just kidding. I haven’t done that since I was 17.
Christina Perri feat. Jason Mraz – Distance
How long can we keep this up, up, up?
And I keep waiting…
After Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and Coachella announced similar (amazing!) lineups, I was sure Outside Lands would follow suit. Never have twelve syllables hurt me so much to say, but NOT EVEN YOUNG THE GIANT COULD SAVE THIS LINEUP! I should have went to Coachella. At least I would have seen Radiohead. And Tupac’s hologram. Boo whore.
I had happy hour at The Prado at Balboa Park last night! We enjoyed margaritas and live music by Trent Hancock. The highlight of my night was when he asked for song requests and hand to god, someone suggested Hoobastank (and it wasn’t me!). The lowlight was parking down the street on 6th and trekking to the restaurant because I didn’t want the valet attendant to see my secret shame! Ha.
Charlotte Sometimes is on The Voice! Waves & The Both Of Us got me through some shit with Il Postino years ago! So excited to see her on the show. Now I have a reason to watch besides Adam Levine’s beard (as if that wasn’t reason enough).
Charlotte Sometimes – Pilot
[audio:http://www.mayanrocks.com/blog/Charlotte Sometimes – Pilot.mp3]
And when I say that you should stay
Remember what I’m drinking’s cheap
And I’m a pilot and I am steering deep
Rusted Root – Send Me On My Way
[audio:http://www.mayanrocks.com/blog/Rusted Root – Send Me On My Way.mp3]
Thanks to this week’s episode of New Girl for my new ringtone! Expect to see these dance moves every time I get a text message…
I’ve waited a hundred years
But I’d wait a million more for you
Nothing prepared me for
What the privilege of being yours would do
I may or may not have cried during this scene when I watched it for the first time at the theater on Friday. And again when I watched it on Saturday. And a third time while watching the bootleg I just downloaded today.
It was a Saturday night, so I was in bed eating beef ribs from Phil’s BBQ when Christine called me and said that Diplo was having a free show downtown for the America’s Cup World Series. I’ve had this weird crush on Diplo ever since I saw him in that Blackberry commercial, so I finished my ribs got ready and was out the door by 7:30.
I had dessert and drinks with Christine at Karl Strauss, walked to the harbor, fist pumped to Diplo’s set, met up with Jessie, had one too many mules at El Dorado, ate late night tamales at La Fachada, and got home at three in the morning.
Today, I woke up with a headache and a half eaten burrito next to my face.
I’ve had Young the Giant’s In the Open Sessions on rotation all summer, but I’m pretty sure I’ll still be listening to them this fall. And next winter. And when I’m on social security.
After the Bon Iver show last night, Jessie and I met up with Shi, Christine and Antonio at The Local and drank away our sorrows till last call. And then we ate our feelings at Lucha Libre. And then we went home alone and cried ourselves to sleep.
If there’s no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I’ll follow you into the dark
Three days of live music wasn’t enough for us, so Jessie and I kept the party going in SD last night at the Death Cab for Cutie show.
Now we’re both sick, and Jess is worried about the half marathon she’s supposed to run this Sunday, while I’m worried about not being able to taste the celebratory beer we’ll both be drinking after she crosses the finish line! Ha. Priorities…
The Joy Formidable – Whirring
[audio:http://www.mayanrocks.com/blog/The Joy Formidable – Whirring.mp3]
I had pizza and beer with Jessie, Shi and Anthony at Pizza Port before heading to The Joy Formidable‘s sold out show at the Belly Up tonight! Anthony was worried that Jessie and I were gonna ditch him for these boys who were supposed to buy Jessie’s extra tickets, but I think we were more worried that Anthony was gonna ditch us for Mike, some guy we had just met at the show who works for Stone Brewing Co. and loves craft beer (like Anthony), plays the drums (like Anthony) for the band Sweet Ever After, and just happens to have the same exact phone as Anthony. When Anthony found out that Mike home brews, his panties fell off and their bromance became official. I mean, am I gonna have to fight Anthony for him???
Quote of the night:
I need to find a new job… one where I can be home by five and drunk by six like you bitches.
– Anthony
I’m actually home by 5:30… but I’m still drunk by six :p
Bon Iver – Re: Stacks
[audio:http://www.mayanrocks.com/blog/Bon Iver – Re Stacks.mp3]
Everything that happens from now on
This is pouring rain
This is paralyzed
You were having a shitty day at work today, so I shared my favorite Bon Iver song with you to make you feel better. And then I found out what you did. Now every time I hear this song, I’ll be reminded of the exact moment you lost me as a friend.
After an exhausting day of marathon running and sign holding, Jessie, Christine, and I hit up FM 94/9‘s Independence Jam in Oceanside and enjoyed some music and beer at the beach!
Band of Skulls – Light of the Morning
[audio:http://www.mayanrocks.com/blog/Band of Skulls – Light of the Morning.mp3]
This week, the girls and I kicked off our summer of music with Lauryn Hill at Humphrey’s by the Bay! Then Errol and Aimee gave me their extra VIP tickets to Channel 933’s Summer Kickoff because they know I love free booze, free food, free concerts, and most importantly, that young chico Pitbull 😉
The Warblers – Somewhere Only We Know (Keane Cover)
[audio:http://www.mayanrocks.com/blog/Glee – Somewhere Only We Know.mp3]
And if you have a minute why don’t we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know
This could be the end of everything
So why don’t we go somewhere only we know
Monster Ball with the bestie last night! Gaga is one crazy ass bitch, and I love her for it. Yes, I’m a little monster, and I’ll be one until she shanks someone dear to my heart. What of it?
Lady Gaga – No Way
[audio:http://www.mayanrocks.com/blog/Lady%20Gaga-No%20Way.mp3]
Linkin Park is only following 28 people on Twitter, and I’m one of them! (Yes, they’re probably only following me to DM me about their contest I won that I didn’t even know I was entering when I checked into their show on Foursquare, but still!)
Now who do I have to bone to get @joelmchale to follow me?
The last time I saw Linkin Park was on their Meteora tour in 2004 from the nosebleed section. Tonight, I got to see Mike Shinoda’s handsome face from ten feet away in the pit! My favorite performance was of One Step Closer, the first Linkin Park song I ever heard. Definitely takes me back!
Adele – Someone Like You (Live Acoustic)
[audio:http://www.mayanrocks.com/blog/Adele – Someone Like You (Live Acoustic).mp3]
I heard that you’re settled down
That you found a girl and you’re married now
I heard that your dreams came true
Guess she gave you things I didn’t give to you
I’m sick in bed and googling pictures of kittens while listening to country music. I’m like an old white lady. Except I’m twenty something. And Asian. And hardly a lady, depending on who you ask.
Neon Trees – Wish List
[audio:http://www.mayanrocks.com/blog/Neon Trees – Wish List.mp3]
The girls and I are doing a gift exchange via Elfster this year. Gifts in our collective wish list include: red tights (not footless), San Diego Chargers hipster panties, an Aveda gift card, and Kid Rainen from the Jabbawockeez.
(I’m pretty sure the latter exceeds our previously agreed upon $30 limit, Chris!)
Oh, Jordan Catalano. I’d let you make out with me in the boiler room, even though you’d just ignore me at the Buffalo Tom show afterward. I can’t wait to see you on my birthday!
Craft & Commerce & Casbah with Jessie last night. She’s an old friend, but my newest concert buddy!
We met up at Craft & Commerce in Little Italy for dinner and drinks. Our bartender, Frank, was truly a man after my own heart. From his plaid button down shirt with his rolled up sleeves, to his mustache, to the artful way he shook those cocktails with such conviction… I don’t normally like mustaches when they aren’t accompanied by a beard, but I think I can make an exception this time. Jessie and I shared the Mother’s Ruin punch bowl. It’s supposed to serve four, but the two of us drank it for dinner. Jessie called it “Frank’s punch,” but Frank told us that his punch packs a bigger bite! Yeah, that’s pretty much when my panties fell off. We were so full off of drinks that we barely touched our appetizers. Jessie had the bacon-wrapped corn dogs, while I ordered my newest obsession, Devils on Horseback (applewood bacon-wrapped dates stuffed with cheese). C&C is home to bacon-wrapped deliciousness, and they even have ice cream sandwiches with candied bacon in it. Def not your typical bar fare!
A corn dog and a couple of dates weren’t enough to soak up all that alcohol, so we walked our drunk asses nine blocks to the Casbah to see Blind Pilot. Even though we were surrounded by freakishly tall hipsters sipping PBR and blocking our view, I really enjoyed the music and spending time with an old friend.
Glee Cast – The Only Exception (Paramore Cover)
[audio:http://www.mayanrocks.com/blog/Glee Cast – The Only Exception.mp3]
I’ve got a tight grip on reality
But I can’t let go of what’s in front of me here
I know you’re leaving in the morning when you wake up
Leave me with some kind of proof it’s not a dream
One of my favorite songs covered by one of my favorite TV shows ♥
Happy hour with the girls at Analog before the Phoenix show at SDSU tonight. We all had tall boys and totchos (nachos with tots instead of chips!) to start. I wanted to get something different this time, so I went with the Dirty Sanchez (grilled cheese with jalapenos and bacon). What was once my favorite move is now my favorite sandwich! Just kidding. (It’s not my favorite sandwich.)
Phoenix was amazeballs. Thomas Mars sang a French lullaby to me. And 4,600 others. But mostly just me.
“Rome” was def my fave performance:
[audio:http://www.mayanrocks.com/blog/Phoenix – Rome.mp3]
Always and forever more
We’re together dead and lonely
I thought I couldn’t do this without you
Single in his bed somewhere
Ashes still it fall, fall, falls
Take what you want from me
It means nothing now
Take everything from me
It means nothing now
Not so easy to forgive, harder to forget
Take what you want
Meaghan Smith – Here Comes Your Man
[audio:http://www.mayanrocks.com/blog/Meaghan Smith – Here Comes Your Man.mp3]
I just won a signed copy of Meaghan Smith’s latest record, The Cricket’s Orchestra! I’ve been of fan of hers ever since she covered the Pixies’ Here Comes Your Man on the 500 Days of Summer soundtrack. She picked three random winners from her email subscription list, and I was one of them! I didn’t even know she was having a contest! I’ve never won anything in my life… What a great way to kick off my weekend 🙂
You make me come
You make me complete
You make me completely miserable
I heard this song on the way to the gym this morning, and it reminded me of high school. I’m not sure what’s more shocking—that this song came out over ten years ago, or that I went to the gym this morning?
You guys are so obsessed with sports, you wear jerseys for teams you’re not even on. But you think you’re on the team, you’ll be like, “Yeah, last night we just didn’t score enough. We just didn’t play enough defense.” We? The Lakers don’t need you. That’s like me watching Grey’s Anatomy in scrubs, but then after the show is over, being like, “Man, we just could not save that guy.”
– Whitney Cummings
That being said, I really thought that we were going to win regionals tonight. I knew I should’ve worn my sequin dress during the season finale of Glee.
Glee Cast – To Sir, With Love
[audio:http://www.mayanrocks.com/blog/Glee Cast – To Sir With Love.mp3]
The Postal Service – The District Sleeps Alone Tonight
[audio:http://www.mayanrocks.com/blog/The Postal Service – The District Sleeps Alone Tonight.mp3]
A stranger with your door key
Explaining that I’m just visiting
And I am finally seeing
Why I was the one worth leaving
I don’t believe it
I won’t believe it
I’m not sad
I understand
That’s how it goes
I’m in love with the Strokes, but I’m not really into Julian Casablancas’ solo album. I do love this one song, however. I’d love it more if he sang it acoustic. In my bedroom. With no pants on.
Call me crazy, I was born to make a mess
Would you love me still if I were to confess
That I had a little too much fun back when I was young
I’ve got these habits that I cannot break
And as I’m older there is more at stake
Go ahead and call me fake, but these are the sins
The sins of my youth
Let’s go slowly, discouraged
We’ll burn the pictures instead
When it’s all over we can barely discuss
For one minute only, not with the fortunate only
Thought it could have been something else
Don’t say a word, just come over and lie here with me
‘Cause I’m just about to set fire to everything I see
I want you so bad I’ll go back on the things I believe
There I just said it, I’m scared you’ll forget about me
Nasty wake up call this morning (and not the good kind, either). It was way too early on a Sunday for all that bitching. I would love to just take a drive along the coast and listen to my summer playlist, but it’s cloudy outside, barely sixty degrees, and oh yeah, my driver’s license is still suspended. Boo whore.
Anyway, on with the playlist:
The Kooks – She Moves In Her Own Way
Vampire Weekend – Campus
Phoenix – 1901
Franz Ferdinand – No You Girls
Weezer – (If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To
Neon Trees – Animal
The Strokes – You Only Live Once
Cake – Let Me Go
Modest Mouse – Float On
Arctic Monkeys – I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor
Today felt like summer, so I wore a dress. It’s kind of a big deal, considering my mid-winter legs hadn’t felt a razor since mid-February. This heat wave isn’t supposed to last, so tomorrow’s outfit will be business as usual… I’m really getting a lot of mileage out of those yoga pants.
If this 90° weather wasn’t enough of a tease, I have the perfect song to put you in the mood for summer:
I just downloaded Sade’s new album, Soldier of Love. I’m not sure which iTunes playlist to file it under—Baby Makin’ Music or Sad Times? Conundrum!
By Your Side is still my all-time favorite Sade song. I’ve known it was going to be my wedding song since the first time I heard it in 2000. Ten years later, I’m still not married I haven’t changed my mind.
When you’re on the outside baby and you can’t get in
I will show you you’re so much better than you know
When you’re lost and you’re alone and you cant get back again
I will find you darling and I will bring you home
From the moment I wake to the moment I sleep
I’ll be there by your side just you try and stop me
I’ll be waiting in line just to see if you care
Oh, did you want me to change?
Well, I changed for good
And I want you to know that you’ll always get your way
I wanted to say…
Don’t you shiver?
SpongeBob SquarePants – “Don’t be a Jerk (It’s Christmas)”
[audio:http://www.mayanrocks.com/blog/spongebobxmas.mp3]
Don’t be a jerk, it’s Christmas!
When others are talking, never interrupt
Don’t put people down or leave the toilet seat up
It’s the time for family and holly and turkey
‘Tis the season to be jolly, not jerky
Things just keep going. We didn’t talk about anything heavy or light. We were just there together. And that was enough.
– The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Il Postino and I dated on and off until he broke my heart last winter. He didn’t talk to me for eight months afterwards. He brought a new girl home for Thanksgiving. And the past two times he has contacted me, she just happened to be out of town.
But when I’m with him, I can’t seem to remember any of that.
He took me to see the meteor shower late last night. He picked me up at my apartment and we carried on as if those gaps between our visits didn’t exist. We got to the beach and were literally the only ones there. Maybe the weekend rain had scared everyone off. We lay the blanket on the sand under a patch of sky that wasn’t covered in clouds and waited… I was cozy in his jacket and gloves, with my head resting on his pillow. Michael Jackson songs played on his iPhone while we talked about the movies we had last seen—something we always used to do together. He told me I would like “Leap Year.” I overlooked that he had seen all of these movies with someone else. He said he would be satisfied if he saw twenty-six shooting stars and asked me how much I’d be happy with. I told him that I couldn’t think of a number, but I would just know when the time came. Being there with him was enough for me. I counted thirteen shooting stars and made a handful of wishes before we left. It started raining on the drive home. We both had work in the morning. I didn’t expect him to stay, but he stayed. I noticed that he always sleeps on the right side of the bed. He reached for my hand and closed his fingers over mine. I asked him if he was seeing anyone. He said that he wasn’t. That they were just friends. That they were never a couple. I wanted to believe him. We talked about why I was moving. We talked about his family. He said that his youngest sister has been mad at him since he moved out. I told him that she just misses him. I fell asleep to the rise and fall of his chest as he slept. He stayed with me till morning. And then he left.
If he wanted to be with me right now, he would be with me. I can’t keep putting my life on hold every time he decides to make a cameo. His appearances aren’t without expectations, and I find myself searching for hidden meanings behind his every word and action. I think he doesn’t want to lose me… but he doesn’t want to keep me, either.
Rihanna – “Stupid in Love”
[audio:http://www.mayanrocks.com/blog/stupidinlove.mp3]
They’re telling me let go
He is not the one
I thought I saw your potential
Guess that’s what made me dumb
Don’t call me past 11pm
It won’t happen again
It happened once
It happened twice
It happened three times
Maybe four times
Maybe five times
Maybe, maybe it happened six times
But it won’t happen a seventh time
How do I slow down?
I can’t relate to my heart now
I’ve thrown what I’ve known
Is enough of me out?
I’m running on empty
I’ve gotta find some way
To fumble right through this new heartache
It’s torn me apart
Oh, lovesick mistake
Turn me away
I went to see Erin McCarley at Soma last night with Chel and Shi. I think she is so amazingly talented and underrated. She reminds me of one of my favorite Stella Im Hultberg paintings, Until the Day—beautiful, but painfully sad.
